TB: Hi. I’m Tab Bennett.
GW: And I’m her favorite cousin George Waverly.
TB: Jes asked us to show you guys around the Inbetween a little. I don’t know why she asked me because I’ve never been there.
GW: Oh great. Here it comes…
TB: What? I’m just saying. It’s going to be hard to rule the Inbetween if We of the Light won’t let me in.
GW: We will let you in. Just not right now.
TB: OK. Great. When?
GW: Can we just show the people the pictures please?
TB: [shrugs]
GW: This picture was taken at the Southern Sea. It’s an area at the bottom of the Inbetween. It’s freezing and adjacent to the world of the giants, but otherwise quite a nice place.
TB: Giants?
GW: I knew a witch from this area once. Yes. I do mean biblically.
TB: [rolls eyes]
GW: You know that saying “cold as a witch’s—
TB: Shut up, George.
GW: I’m just telling the people what they want to know.
TB: They don’t want to know about the body temp of some witch you felt up two hundred years ago.
GW: Don’t they?
GW: That’s the Castle at the Center. It’s been the seat of the Queen for thousands of years.
TB: It looks like a fairy tale.
GW: It’s beautiful, I know, but it’s the same as any castle and the people who live there are the same as any who live at court – Elvish or human.
TB: Meaning?
GW: Meaning some of them are good and some are bad. There are people you can trust and people who smile at you while twisting the knife they’ve stuck in your back.
TB: Sounds great.
GW: It is. [laughs] Would you believe I miss it?
TB: You know what? I would.
TB: What about this one?
GW: That’s Robbin’s house. [pauses] Can I tell you something kind of sad?
TB: If past performance is any indication, you’re really good at telling me something sad. Maybe the best.
GW: Robbin built that house for your mother, for Gwen.
TB: If you’ve already read Inbetween you know why that’s sad. If you haven’t, well… you should. The whole thing is too complicated to explain now.
GW: You could just tell them—
TB: No.
GW: Come on, Tab. Just tell them.
TB: Fine. [sighs] Robbin was once in love with my mother. He was also my first boyfriend. And aside from Alex, he is the only other man I’ve ever loved. See? It’s like I said. Complicated.
GW: You recognize this one?
TB: I’ve only ever seen it in a vision, but yeah, I recognize it. That’s the field where Alex almost died.
GW: [nods] It’s near a beautiful little farming village called Yamorrow.
TB: I’m sure it’s great but even if they have the best fish and chips in the world, it’s the one place in the Inbetween I have no desire to see firsthand. And I hate sunflowers.
GW: The sunflowers didn’t try to kill him, you know?
TB: I know. I just don’t care.
GW: This is the River of Skye. It’s named for the first Queen of the Inbetween, Skye. She is said to have created the World from her tears. Just to give you a frame of reference, Skye is to the Light Elvish as God is to Man. According to the Stories, she is the origin of the matriarchal line; Tab is the current stopping point. Which, if you think about it, kind of makes you the Elvish Jesus.
TB: That’s kind of a stretch.
GW: [laughs] When the Queen dies, her body is wrapped in linen and flowers and set on this river. It’s said to be the path she takes to Eversummer – the next world.
TB: Like Elvish heaven?
GW: Just like that.
GW: This is Alex’s house.
TB: Really? Wow.
GW: As the handsome prince in this story, he needs a castle.
TB: [sighs]
GW: What?
TB: Nothing. I was just thinking that I’m so lucky. Alex is gorgeous, smart, funny, sweet—
GW: Don’t forget great in the sack.
TB: [Blushes] How could I?
GW: So you’re happy with him? No regrets about Robbin?
TB: There are things I feel bad about with Robbin. Of course there are. But I don’t regret that I’ve ended up with Alex. Once you have your Homecoming, you’ll understand.
GW: I’ve had my Homecoming, Tab.
TB: Really? When? Who is she?
GW: I don’t want to talk about it. [runs his hands through his hair] It was a long time ago. A long time ago.Tour’s over. [gets up and leaves quickly.]
TB: George? Um…[watches GW walk away] So, that was an unexpected end to this thing. Sorry about that. I had no idea. Anyway, thanks for stopping by. Check out the tours of the Underneath and Witchwood Manor too. See you in the sequel!
